- Story Text: - INTRO: Hundreds of demonstrators staged a protest in Paris at plans to expel African immigrants. Ten people facing deportation have been on hunger strike for more than a month.
------------------------------------------------------------------- France's tough new stance against illegal immigrants has sparked a series of protests, sit-ins and hunger strikes.
In Paris on Wednesday (August 7) hundreds turned up at a demonstration in support of 300 Africans who are occupying the city's Saint Bernard church, and refusing to leave until they are allowed to stay in France.
Ten of the Africans are on the 34th day of a hunger strike.
France has about four million legal foreign residents and an estimated one million illegal immigrants. Immigration law bars some foreign-born parents from legal residence even if their children have the right to remain in France because they were born there.
The French Interior Minister Jean-Louis Debre says a few very exceptional cases will be dealt with, on a humanitarian basis.
