- Story Text: INTRO: Five people were injured in Moscow on Thursday (July 11), after a bomb ripped through a trolleybus in the city centre during the morning rush hour.
-------------------------------------------------------------- A bomb left in a bag ripped through a trolleybus in the centre of Moscow in the morning rush hour on Thursday, wounding at least five people, officials said.
The Moscow mayor's press office said in a statement published by Interfax news agency that the blast occurred when the driver opened a bag with vegetables which passengers passed to him, after noticing that it had been left unattended.
The statement quoted investigators as saying preliminary evidence showed it had been "a terrorist act".
At the scene of the blast, off Moscow's Pushkin Square, police were examining the wreckage. The front part of the trolleybus had been blown off. A nearby passenger car had also been damaged.
The press statement said five people had been injured but only three of them had been taken to hospital. The driver had suffered serious burns.
Itar-Tass news agency said very few people were on the trolleybus at the time.
Four people were killed last month when a bomb exploded in the Moscow underground. Authorities also called it an act of terrorism, but have not identified those responsible.
Thursday's blast came one day after President Boris Yeltsin gave his new security supremo, general Alexander Lebed, enhanced powers to fight crime in the Russian capital.
