- Story Text: A Palestinian killed in an explosion in the West Bank on Saturday (January 27) belonged to the militant Hamas movement, Palestinian police said on Sunday (January 28).
Israeli media reports said he was making a bomb, which went off prematurely, in the Arab village of Samua, near Hebron.
Palestinian police identified him as Ahmed Salem Abu Seif, 25, and said he was a member of Hamas, an Islamic group opposed to Israel-PLO peace deals.
Hamas has vowed to attack Israeli targets to avenge the death of its master bombmaker Yahya Ayyash, who died in Palestinian-ruled Gaza on January 5 when his cellular phone exploded. Hamas has accused Israel of being behind the death.
Samua is under the administration of the Palestinian Authority but Israel maintains overall responsibility for security in the village under a West Bank self-rule deal signed with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) last September.
