- Story Text: A powerful car bomb exploded outside a luxury hotel in Lima early on Wednesday (May 24), killing four people and wounding at least 15 others, authorities and witnesses said.
The bomb detonated in the early hours of Wednesday at the Hotel Maria Angola, in the city's Miraflores district, where a casino with about 30 people inside was operating on the ground floor.
Miraflores mayor Alberto Andrade said four people had been killed, including two security guards and an employee of the casino who died at the scene. The fourth person died in hospital, he said.
Andrade said at least 15 people had been taken to local hospitals, most of them with minor wounds. Damage to the building was extensive.
Andrade said police suspected Maoist Shining Path guerrillas, who have been waging war on the government since 1980, had carried out the attack.
Olga Exposito, a stewardess with Viasa airlines who was in the casino, said four men with machineguns entered the casino and told people to get on the floor.
The men told the crowd it was a robbery and a few minutes later the bomb exploded, she said.
