- Story Text: - INTRO: Israel has sent fighter-bombers to pound guerrilla targets in Lebanon after rockets fired from Lebanon wounded 13 Israelis.
------------------------------------------------ Thirteen Israelis were wounded on Tuesday (April 9) when Katyusha rockets fired by Hizbollah guerrillas in south Lebanon slammed into northern Israel.
Several houses in the northen Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona were damaged in the rocket attack, while residents were told to remain in air-raid shelters for the day.
In Beirut, the pro-Iranian Hizbollah (Party of God) said it had fired rockets into northern Israel in retaliation for a roadside bomb blast on Monday that killed a teenager and wounded three in the village of Braachit in south Lebanon. The Israeli army said it had not planted the bomb.
After the rocket attack, dozens of residents of Kiryat Shmona burned tyres in the town's main street.
When police removed them, they shouted: "Police state" and "(Prime Minister Shimon) Peres go home".
Israeli security sources said the rocket salvoes hit the Galilee panhandle, where Kiryat Shmona is located, and the western Galilee. There were no casualties or damage in the western Galilee.
In Lebanon, security sources said four Israeli planes fired rockets into guerrilla-held areas near the village of Majdal Silm used by Hizbollah fighters to attack the Israeli-held buffer zone in south Lebanon.
The Israeli army confirmed its planes had attacked south Lebanon. There was no word of casualties.
Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres visited the Kiryat Shmona area and said he would not be pushed into a hasty response to guerrilla rocket attacks.
"I think we are considering in a very cool way what should be done, what shouldn't be done...our considerations are on the merits of the case. They are not coloured by either political consideration or any other consideration," he told reporters.
Opposition members have criticised Peres, who is facing May 29 national elections, for not hitting back hard at the guerrillas after earlier guerrilla attacks.
The air raids were preceeded by heavy artillery shelling of the Majdal Silm area by Israeli forces stationed in the border buffer zone.
In a statement issued in Beirut, the fundamentalist faction blamed the Israelis for planting the Braachit bomb.
