- Story Text: U.S. and Iraqi convoy attacked in Mosul.
A car bomb exploded near a convoy of Iraqi and U.S.
forces in the northern city of Mosul on Wednesday (January
12, 2005), witnesses said.
They said it happened as the convoy was driving in the
industrial neighbourhood east of the city centre, hitting
an Iraqi National Guards' vehicle and setting it on fire.
The U.S. forces sealed off the area and prevented
people from approaching.
There was no immediate U.S. comment and no reports of
casualties.
Violence has surged in the run-up to Iraq's January 30
election and Mosul, 390 km (225 miles) from Iraq, has been
a major trouble spot in recent weeks and the situation
seems to be going from bad to worse.
Mosul has become increasingly volatile since a
U.S.-led assault on the western city of Falluja in
November.
