- Story Text: Car bomb explodes near U.S. convoy in Baghdad/U.S.
troops blow up mine in a controlled explosion near Baghdad.
A car bomb exploded near a U.S. convoy on a Baghdad
highway on Friday (June 11), but it was not immediately
clear if there were any American casualties.
U.S. military vehicles sealed off the six-lane highway
cutting through the Saydiya residential district in western
Baghdad. The U.S. military had no immediate comment.
An Iraqi witness said he had noticed a man spending a
long time apparently trying to repair a grey Mercedes at
the roadside before being picked up by another man in an
Opel saloon.
Earlier, troops blew up a landmine in a controlled
explosion near Baghdad.
Insurgents frequently target U.S. convoys with roadside
bombs, car bombs, landmines or rocket-propelled grenades.
The U.S. military said on Friday an American soldier
had died of wounds sustained in an attack in eastern
Baghdad on Wednesday. That raised the U.S. combat death
toll in Iraq to 606 since the start of last year's invasion.
