- Story Text: French President Jacques Chirac and European
Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso condemn London
bomb attacks
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso
and French Jacques Chirac joined other world leaders in
condemning the terrorist bomb attacks in London on Thursday
(July 7). Barroso said they represented, "an attack not
only to Britain but also to all the civilised world."
"We strongly condemn them and at the same time we want to express
our sympathy to the victims and to the families
of the victims and we can tell you that our determination
is even stronger now."
Chirac was equally passionate in his condemnation saying,
"This summit has been marked by this morning's dreadful
news about the attacks in London, that shocked all the (G8)
members."
Barroso and Chirac gave their reactions from the G8
Summit which is taking place in Gleneagles, Scotland and
being hosted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The day
started with the G8 leaders and guest leaders from Brazil,
China, India, Mexico and South Africa focused on climate
change discussions.
Blair returned to London from the summit but in a
statement before leaving said the talks would continue.
Barroso confirmed that they did carry on after they were
put in the charge of a senior British diplomat but that the
mood was sombre.
A statement from the G8 called the blasts "an attack
not on one nation but on all nations and civilised people."
