hometown of former president Saddam Hussein.
A suicide car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near
Police Academy in the city of Tikrit on Sunday (July 18, 2004),
wounding one policeman.
The car was blown up in a parking lot near the academy
and the city's governor office, damaging a number of cars.
" At around 0830 this morning the Police Academy was
attacked by a suicide car bomb, which exploded near the
checkpoint. One of our colleages was wounded," said police
officer, Colonel Ibrahim al-Jibouri.
Tikrit, 170 km north of Baghdad, is part of the Sunni
Triangle area, which also extends to the west of the
country. The region is a bastion of resistance to U.S.
forces and has seen frequent attacks on Iraqis seen as
collaborators, including police.
On Saturday two cars exploded in Baghdad and
Mahmoudiya, killing more than six people and injuring 50
other people.
