- Story Text: Gunmen fire on two envoys in Baghdad, bomb targets
U.S. patrol near Iranian embassy and reports of attack on
Russian embassy.
Gunmen attacked the envoys of two Muslim states in
Baghdad on Tuesday (July 5), three days after Egypt's chief
diplomat in Iraq was abducted from the street.
Militants opened fire on on a convoy carrying
Pakistan's envoy to Iraq Mohammad Younis Khan, before
speeding off after his guards returned fire. There were no
reports of any injuries.
Pakistan immediately withdrew its ambassador from
Baghdad.
Hours earlier, the envoy from the Gulf Arab state of
Bahrain was shot in the hand during what his government
called a kidnap attempt as he drove to work.
About four gunmen opened fire on the envoy's car in
Baghdad's Mansour neighbourhood as he was being driven to
work, a police source said.
A hospital source said the envoy, whose name Iraqi
officials gave variously as Hassan or Ihsan al-Ansari, was
wounded in the right hand by a single bullet.
A roadside bomb exploded close to a U.S. military
patrol on Tuesday in Baghdad, near the Iranian embassy
injuring a civilian in the attack, Iraqi police said.
The detonation came two hours after the attack on the
Bahrain envoy's car.
"An Improvised Explosive Device hit a personal security
detachment as it was travelling back into the international
zone this morning. Only one person was injured," said a
U.S. army spokesman.
And there are reports that the Russian Embassy has also
been targeted by the insurgency.
Officials at the embassy declined comment on reports,
relayed by diplomats at other missions, that one of their
convoys was shot up on Baghdad's airport road on Sunday
(July 3).
