- Story Text: A suicide car bomber targeted Iraqi National Guards,
killing five guardsmen and wounded 22 others including
civilians.
A suicide car bomber targeted Iraqi National
Guard troops in the restive town of Baquba on Tuesday
(December 28, 2004) as they were working on the aftermath of an
earlier roadside bombing, killing five guardsmen and
wounding 22 others, including civilians.
According to witnesses the attack began when a roadside
bomb wounded four Iraqi guardsmen with an Iraqi National
Guards convoy in the industrial neighbourhood.
A second roadside bomb was found at the attack scene and
an Iraqi explosive ordnance disposal team was called in to
remove it.
As the removal team worked, the suicide car bomber drove
through a security cordon, setting off the vehicle bomb.
"We were walking in the street and the National Guards
were deployed in the area and suddenly an explosion took
place and I was wounded by flying pieces of glass," said a
civilian wounded in the attack.
Part of the in the insurgent-heavy Sunni Triangle,
Baquba, 65 km (30 miles) northeast of Baghdad, has been a
frequent scene of clashes between insurgents and coalition
forces.
Insurgents have mainly targeted members of the interim
government's security forces - whom they consider to be
collaborators with the American occupation forces - killing
hundreds in the past two months.
