- Story Text: Police guards have been placed on ail British diplomatic and consular buildings in Rome tonight (Friday 5 November) following Thursday morning's bomb attack on the residence of Britain's Minister to the Vatican, Mr. Desmond Crawley.
The bomb, which was planted on the windowsill of the residence, seriously injured a passer-by. A spokesman said later that the letters IRA -- the initials of the Irish Republican Army -- ware found scrawled in black paint on a wall of the building.
The attack, apparently the first carried out by the IRA in Italy, came two days before the end of the world synod of Roman Catholic bishops in the Vatican. The synod has been the focus of attention for Ireland -- a strongly Roman Catholic country.
