- Story Text: Iraqi officials have taken journalists to the southern
city of Basra to see what they said was damage caused by the
U.S.-led attack against Iraq.
Television cameras were taken to the southern Iraqi
city of Basra on Sunday (March 23) to see what the Iraqi
authorities claimed were the remains of buildings demolished
by U.S. and British bombardments.
Correspondents were shown what the Iraqis said were the
remains of a local school and later visited a hospital where
an injured man with chest and neck injuries was treated by
medical staff.
Iraq's information minister said on Monday (March 24)
that 62 people had been killed by U.S.-led forces in the
previous 24 hours and more than 400 had been wounded.
Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf gave the figures at a news
conference, breaking them down by city. He said that 14 people
had been killed in the southern city of Basra.
