- Story Text: Car bomb targets top Iraqi National Guard general in
Baghdad.
A car bomb targeting the chief of staff of the
U.S.-backed Iraqi National Guard killed one person and
injured eight others on Tuesday (December 28, 2004), a police
official said.
Staff General Mudher al-Mula, who was leaving his home
on the edge of the Adhamiya district of Baghdad in a convoy
when the bomb went off, apparently escaped unhurt.
Nu'man hospital in Baghdad received eight wounded
people.
"The emergency ward of Al-Nu'man hospital received
today eight wounded people, most of whom are not suffering
from serious injury, except one who was seriously injured
in his left and right legs. He was operated on and the
others will be later" said Dr. Leith of Nu'man Hospital.
Iraqi Defence Ministry officials were not immediately
available for comment.
Witnesses said the car bomb appeared to have been
parked close to the general's house in a long line of
vehicles waiting overnight for petrol, a common feature of
Baghdad's fuel crisis.
Mula was a general under Saddam Hussein, although as a
member of the majority Shi'ite Muslim community, he was not
typical. The Sunni minority dominated the country under
Saddam and Sunni insurgents are now battling to overthrow
the new, U.S.-backed government, which is holding an
election next month.
Insurgents have killed hundreds of Iraqi National
Guards in recent months. Jordanian Musab Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi claimed responsibility for an ambush that killed
49 soldiers northeast of Baghdad two months ago.
