- Story Text: Another attack on road where 4 foreigners were hit
in drive-by shooting on Sunday May 30.
Witnesses said shots were fired at a goods vehicle
on a highway in Baghdad on Monday (May 31, 2004) on the same road
where 4 foreigners, travelling in two cars, were attacked
the previous day.
It appeared that a roadside bomb exploded under the
truck after the shooting setting the driver's compartment
on fire. A witness at the scene said a taxi driver passing
on the other side of the road was injured in the shooting.
There have been several attacks in the past 10 days on
the highway leading west out of Baghdad.
There were reports on Sunday that four foreigners,
travelling in two cars, were shot at, swerved out of
control and hit a third car causing major damage to all
vehicles. Although it was initially believed that two of
the British nationals had died in the attack it later
transpired that they had escaped from their cars, flagged
down another and got away unharmed. One Iraqi died in the
attack.
Attacks on US soldiers and foreign interests in Iraq
are widely expected to increase in the run up to the June
30 handover of sovereignty to an interim, care-taker
government.
