- Story Text: The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad has
claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that wounded at
least 30 people in a crowded pedestrian mall in the seaside
Israeli town of Netanya, the first such attack since the start
of the U.S.-led war on Iraq.
Islamic Jihad leader Abdallah Shami said his group had
sent the bomber and that it would continue its armed
resistance against Israel.
Speaking in Gaza hours after Sunday's (March 30) blast
Shami said the bombing showed Palestinian "solidarity" with
Iraq.
He said: "The operation which took place in Netanya today
is part of our struggle - on the day marking Land Day - and it
reassures our attachment to this country and the fact that we
will never leave this country despite the aggressions and
threats which we are faced with because of the occupation.
"This was also done in solidarity with the Iraqi people
and their steadfastness against the attacks of the British and
American who are serving the interests of Israel first and
foremost. The objectives and interests of Israel's war and the
war against our people are the same."
In a faxed statement Islamic Jihad claimed it had sent a
first wave of suicide bombers to Baghdad to help Iraqis fight
U.S. and British troops.
"Al-Quds Brigades brings to our people and nation the good
news of the arrival of its first martyrdom (attackers) to the
heart of Baghdad," said a statement from the armed wing of
Islamic Jihad.
"This is to fulfil the holy duty of defending Arab and
Muslim land," it said.
Islamic Jihad is listed as a terrorist organisation by the
U.S. government.
