- Story Text: Bomb threat closes Britain's embassy in Indonesia.
Britain closed its embassy and consulate in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday (January 14, 2005) after a specific bomb threat was made against the mission late on Thursday.
Indonesian police searched the heavily protected
embassy and also the consulate overnight, but did not find
any devices.
"In response to a specific bomb threat to the British
Embassy, we have temporarily suspended services to the
public
with immediate effect in the British Embassy building and
the British Consulate General offices in the next door
Deutsche Bank building," Britain's Foreign Office said in a
statement posted on its Web site (www.fco.gov.uk).
Bomb threats are common in Indonesia, where militant
Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah -- seen as the regional arm
of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network -- has been blamed
for a series of attacks in recent years on Western targets.
In 2002, bombings at two nightclubs on the Indonesian
holiday island of Bali killed 202 people, a blast at the
J.W. Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003 killed 12 people and
a truck bombing at the Australian embassy in Jakarta last
year killed 10 people.
