- Story Text: Suspects of Istanbul bombings appear in court for
the fifth time.
Islamic suspects accused of involvement in bombings
in the Turkish city of Istanbul in 2003 appeared in court
for the fifth time on Monday (February 14). 38 of the 71
suspects attended the court in Istanbul.
A Turkish cell with links to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda
network is accused of planning four truck bomb attacks on
two synagogues, the British consulate and London-based HSBC
bank. Sixty-one people, including the bombers, were killed
and hundreds wounded in two days of violence in November
2003.
Muslim but secular Turkey is a major force in NATO and
aspires to join the European Union. Its close ties with the
West and Israel have reaped it scorn from Islamic
militants, observers say.
