embassy convoy in the Gaza Strip were Americans, diplomatic
sources said.
All three people killed in the bombing of a U.S.
embassy convoy in Gaza on Wednesday (October 15) were
Americans, diplomatic sources said.
The sources confirmed a statement by the Israeli
Foreign Ministry saying that three Americans were killed in
the attack. A fourth person was evacuated to an Israeli
hospital with moderate wounds. That person's nationality
was not immediately known.
The convoy included officials from U.S. Middle East
envoy John Wolf's office and from the CIA, Israeli radio
said, but added that Wolf was not in the convoy at the time
of the blast.
A silver Cherokee jeep used by American diplomats was
completely destroyed by the blast, which left a crater from
what appeared to be a roadside bomb that sprayed blood and
wreckage metres away.
The incident occurred in the Gaza Strip about two
kilometres (1.2 miles) south of the Erez Crossing to
Israel.
Hospital workers bundled up body parts in a bed sheet.
A black shoe was seen lying on the ground.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie condemned the
roadside bombing.
"We strongly condemn this incident regardless of who is
behind it and we express deep regret over the killing and
injury," Qurie told reporters.
"We will carry out the necessary investigation from our
side and will follow up the issue," Qurie added. He also
sent condolences to the families of the victims.
Israeli tanks swept to the scene of the bomb blast
shortly after the incident and opened fire with machine
guns in the vicinity.
Palestinian security sources said the Israeli army had
informed them that troops would arrive with U.S. diplomatic
officials to carry out an investigation of the blast.
Tanks fired heavy machine guns, which scattered nearby
Palestinian inhabitants, shortly after a land mine exploded
near a tank, lightly wounding three soldiers.
A U.S.-backed "road map" for peace has been badly
battered by tit-for-tat violence in recent months.
