- Story Text: Ten killed and 29 wounded in car bombing near an
Iraqi police patrol in southern Baghdad..
A car bomb exploded near an Iraqi police patrol in
southern Baghdad on Wednesday (June 15, 2005), killing at least
10 people and wounding 29, police said.
The blast occurred in the Zaffraniya district of the
city, blowing a crater in the road and destroying half a
dozen cars, including several police vehicles. Police and
civilians were among the dead and wounded, police said.
It was the second large bomb attack of the day.
Earlier, a suicide bomber wearing an Iraqi army uniform
killed at least 23 people and wounded 29 at an army mess
hall north of the capital, police and military sources
said.
The building was left charred and ruined after the
blast in the town of Khalis, 60 km (40 miles) north of
Baghdad, near the town of Baquba.
Iraq has seen a surge in suicide car bombings since
late April, when a new Shi'ite-led government was named.
Several of those attacks have happened in the Baquba area
and most of them have targeted Iraq's Shi'ite-dominated
security forces.
