- Story Text: Hundreds of intellectuals in New Delhi, marched on Friday (12 Jan.) towards the United States Information Service building to protest against the continued bombing of North Vietnam. The demonstrators, who included many writers and journalists, distributed a pamphlet calling for an end to the bombing and for the signing of a peace treaty between Vietnam and the United States. The previous day, the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indra Gandhi condemned what she called "the savings bombing of Vietnam" and expressed admiration for the "unconquerable spirit of the Vietnamese people." She was speaking at a dinner in honour of the Polish Prime Minister, Piotr Jaroszewicz, who is visiting India.
SYNOPSIS: Intellectuals in Delhi, India, have taken part in a protest march against the continued United States bombing of North Vietnam. Among the marchers were writers, journalists, teachers and artists demanding the end to bombings and to the war.
Police were called out to protect the United States Information Service building as the demonstrators approached. Only hours before, the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, condemned what she called "the savage bombing of North Vietnam". She was speaking at a dinner in honour of the visiting Polish Prime Minister. Mrs. Gandhi expressed her admiration for the bravery of the Vietnamese people. A sentiment which was echoed in a pamphlet distributed by the protesting Indian intellectuals. In addition, the marchers demanded the right of self-determination for the people of lndo-China.
