Three people were killed in Beirut on February 24 when a powerful car bomb exploded in the Moslem western sector of the city. Explosives packed into the rear of a Mercedes taxi went off near an Iraqi bank and the Greek Embassy, covering the street with pools of blood, twisted metal and shattered glass. The taxi driver, a woman passenger and a street trader were killed in the blast. Syrian and Lebanese soldiers fired into the air to clear the area as ambulances of the Lebanese Red Cross rushed to the area. No-one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
