- Story Text: At least six people died and more than 30 were wounded, several critically, when tonnes of rockets and shells exploded at a christian-owned ammunition dump in Lebanon on Tuesday (June 18).
Panic-stricken people ran from their homes in the port city of Jounieh as a series of blasts rocked homes and apartments in the Maameltein District, igniting trees and electricity poles.
Christian Lebanese Forces (LF) militia sources said dissidents opposed to a government peace initiative detonated a massive bomb hidden in a rented truck, setting off a series of explosions. But some local residents accused LF militiamen of carelessness.
By Wednesday morning (June 19), the Maameltein district was a scene of devastation, with damaged buildings, wrecked vehicles, charred trees and poles, and huge craters throughout the area. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
