- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told conference delegates at the 8th Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation (AGOA) forum in Nairobi on Wednesday (August 5) that the ingredients were in place for growth and prosperity in Africa.
"The ingredients are all here for an extraordinary explosion of growth, prosperity and progress. This is the storyline of opportunity that I want to tell because I know how important it is to translate legislation like AGOA, the efforts of governments like Kenya's into daily changes that people can look to," Clinton said.
A U.S. trade programme established in 2000 allows countries in sub-Saharan Africa to export more than 6,400 product lines to the United States without paying duties.
Washington is looking at ways to boost trade with the 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, which accounts for little more than 1 percent of U.S. exports and only 3 percent of imports.
The U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act is due to expire in 2015, and some African countries would like that extended as the deadline causes uncertainty among potential investors. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
