- Story Text: IAAF council members have met in Mombasa to deliberate on how to choose a host city for the 2011 world cross country championships. The host cities for the 2011 and 2013 World Cross-Country Championships will be named on Tuesday (March 27), said the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) in Mombasa.
Brisbane in Australia, Daegu in Korea and Moscow are bidding for the 2011 tournament, and Barcelona for the 2013 event along with the two cities that lose their bid for the 2011 event, the world governing body's general secretary Pierre Weiss told reporters on the first day of a three-day IAAF council on Monday (March 26).
"I am pretty sure you know that we have three candidates for 2011. In alphabetical order, Brisbane in Australia, Daegu in Korea, Moscow in Russia and we have as well three candidates for 2013, because one of the candidates for 2011 will be a winner and so will be out so we will have two left plus Barcelona in Spain," said Weiss.
The bidding cities have put up stands where they are showcasing their bids.
"Our strongest point is the city itself because out of all competitors, Moscow is the only capital and our city has everything to host such championship," said Alexander Polinsky at the Moscow stand.
Either Brisbane or the Korean city of Daegu are almost certain to win the right to host one of the championships, with the other set to go to Moscow or Barcelona.
The Daegu bid has the backing of several big Korean multinational companies, while one of Brisbane's strengths is the presence in Mombasa of former athletes.
Brisbane will be the second city to present its bid to the IAAF Council on Tuesday.
Barcelona, which is only chasing the 2013 championships, will make its official presentation first, followed by Brisbane, Moscow and Daegu.
