- Story Text: Cameroon extends its unbeaten run to 8 games after coming from behind to tame brave Kenya in international friendly played in Nairobi.
Cameroon wound up its preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations by seeing off a spirited Kenyan side 3-1 in friendly played in Nairobi on Saturday( January 9).
French based, Achille Webo grabbed a double and helped the indomitable lions stretch their unbeaten run to eight games on the bounce as he capitalised on two defence lapses by the East Africans.
The Cameroonians who arrived in Kenya on Thursday commence their Cup of Nations campaign amid the controrversy surrounding the attack on the Togolese team.
Two members of Togo's national soccer delegation died on Saturday (January 9) following an ambush on the team's bus as it travelled to the African Nations Cup in Angola, a team member told French radio.
Friday's attack, in which the driver was also killed and seven others were injured, took place in Cabinda, a province where guerrillas have fought a secession campaign for decades.
A chief spokesman for Togo's soccer federation said the team lost the assistant coach and the team's press officer, and that Togo had not yet decided whether to pull out of the tournament.
"Obviously we talked about it last night, even though we only had sparse information. We did not have all the information, so there were a lot of questions. We thought about our Togolese friends, we played against them in the selection process, and we thinking about them and sympathized with them,"" said Paul Le Guen coach of the Cameron team.
Togolese officials named the dead men as media officer Stanislas Ocloo and assistant coach Amalete Abalo, and said reserve goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale had been evacuated to Johannesburg for medical treatment.
Fans around the continent have reacted angrily to the attack and some have called for further investigations to be carried out
"It is very unfortunate, in fact we had a prayer for them at our camp and we are wishing them well, wishing them speedy recovery and in the spirit of African brotherhood I think they should not consider pulling out of the tournament," Twahir Muhiddin, Kenya's National team coach told journalists after the friendly match against Cameroon.
Media reports later on Saturday indicated that Togolese and Manchester City striker, Emmanuel Adebayor and his team had pulled out of the tournament due to the attack.
"This is a very sad story, even the 2010 World Cup is not looking good. People from Europe will be scared because we are even mistreating our fellow Africans," Said Chizi Mox and ardent Togo fan.
The Togo team bus, travelling from its training ground in the Republic of Congo, had just entered the enclave, geographically cut off from the rest of Angola, when it came under heavy gunfire.
A crisis meeting was expected to take place in the Angolan capital Luanda between local officials and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over tournament security.
Former Togo coach Otto Pfister said the assault would cast a shadow over the World Cup. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
