- Story Text: United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to meet with Kenyan leaders ahead crucial 2013 elections.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Kenya on Saturday (August 4), as part of her seven-nation tour of Africa.
Clinton is Nairobi for talks with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, partners in a coalition government that was formed in 2008 after violence that saw more than 1,000 Kenyans killed after disputed elections in 2007.
The Secretary of State is expected to discuss Kenya's upcoming elections in 2013 and press leaders to ensure that there is no repeat of the chaotic 2007 polls.
Her visit comes a day after a suspected suicide bomber killed himself and wounded nine people near a Nairobi air base on Friday (August 3).
Nairobi has blamed a series of recent attacks on Somalia's al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab, which has threatened to retaliate since the east African economic powerhouse pursued the Islamists into Somalia in October.
Clinton is expected to strengthen U.S. security ties in the face of the growing threats.
Clinton's African tour will culminate in a private meeting with the continent's elder statesman, 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
