- Story Text: At least five people were killed in the Kenyan coastal town of Kilifi in an attack by unidentified machete-wielding men as voting began in a tense presidential election on Monday, district police said, bringing the death toll in violence on the coast to nine so far.
In Nairobi, police inspector general David Kimaiyo said the situation on the coast was still being assessed.
"There was, last night there was an incident of an attack by members who are believed to be the MRC and as a result of which some of them have been killed and some were arrested. And also a number of our officers lost their lives. We are going to asses the situation, this is just a preliminary report. But when I come from the coast there, then I will be able to confirm to you how many numbers."
He also reported explosions in the towns of Mandera and Garissa, but said nobody was injured.
"Even in Mandera we have already given the chain of security stationed in the entire country, that today in the morning there was also an explosive in Mandera as well also in Garissa, but nobody was injured. It was an IED that was exploded by somebody on a remote control, but probably from the other side of the road. But nobody was injured.and the voting is going on well."
Officials and candidates in Kenya have made impassioned appeals to avoid a repeat of the violence that erupted following the disputed result of the 2007 election. More than 1,200 people were killed, shattering Kenya's reputation as one of Africa's most stable democracies and bringing its economy to a standstill. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
