- Story Text: The couple residing in the South Coast were attacked early on Thursday morning by members of the MRC wo told them either to leave the region or die.
The group advocates for the coastal region to separate from the rest of Kenya and form their own republic.
Patrick Onyari and his wife Benedeta Mueni were evacuated to Mombasa General Hospital where they were treated and admitted in the wards.
"I saw someone coming with a flash light, as if he was passing. When he came close to me, he said MRC is not Kenya and started attacking me. I tried to block it, but almost 30 of them came. They started attacking me. I could not defend myself, so I turned around and they cut my back. That's when I ran away and hid because I didn't have the strength to run. That is when they entered the house and attacked my wife." said Patrick Onyari.
The couple said they were referred to as "foreigners" because they are not originally from the coastal region and are from the inner areas of Kenyan.
"I am a Kamba and my husband is a Kisii. The way they keep talking, they say other tribes should go back home so that they can leave them their land. That's the language that they use. It's only God who can decide whether I will be able to return home but if I don't go back, where else can I go?" Said a heavily bandaged Mueni.
On Monday March 04 as Kenyans prepared to go to the polls, several security officers were killed, mainly hacked to death on two separate attacks on the Kenyan coast by machete-wielding men who left note with the MRC slogan "Coast if not Kenya". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
