A technical hitch on Tuesday (March 5, 2013) slowed down the tallying of presidential elections results in Kenya, a senior electoral official said.
The computer system had developed a disk space issue on one of the servers, Isaac Hassan, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said.
"There is growing concern of the slow pace at which they are being relayed, indeed the commission is aware of this delay and that this giving rise to different speculations and rumours that the server of the commission has crashed, that we have no back up data. I want to assure you that this is not true, what is true is that there has been delay in transmission of results from the polling stations," Hassan said.
During Monday's (March 4, 2013) voting, several polling stations experienced difficulties with the electronic voter identification machines. The commission, however, quickly calmed fears that it would compromise the elections.
Hassan said the election commission will start announcing results on Wednesday (March 6).
"What matters here is the final results and they are coming. We are going to be announcing official results from all the 290 constituencies beginning tomorrow," he said.
The commission's provisional tally showed Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of Prime Minister Raila Odinga by 53 to 42 percent with about half the votes counted. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
