- Story Text: In a bid to take art out of exclusive city-based galleries and into relatively poor rural areas, a five member team of international artists has set off on bicycles from the Kenyan capital Nairobi to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Bike Art 2000 is a group of international artists that are taking their work, via bicycle, directly to people in the rural areas of Kenya and Tanzania - people who never get a chance to visit prestigious city galleries.
The project which also took place in the UK last year, is the brain child of German team leader, sculptor, and biking enthusiast Marco Grieser. This is completely new to me, of actually all the physical exhaustion of cycling and then sitting down and then drawing or sculpting or picking up things from the road that will be twice as much as normal The team of one German, one Norwegian, and three Kenyans is made up of sculptors, a dancer/musician, and a poet. Their plan is to stop in towns along the way - exhibiting sculptures made from materials discarded on the road side, performing songs and dances as well as poetry readings. The team hopes that the people they meet en route will also share their traditional art and cultural experiences with them.
At their flagging-off exhibition in Nairobi, they treated fellow artists, friends and well wishers to some of their latest sculptures, music and dancing - basically the kind of experiences they intend to have on their month long journey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
