- Summary: Survivors from the cruise ship Achille Lauro disaster were taken to the Red Sea port of Djibouti and Mombasa, in Kenya. Nearly 1,000 passengers and crew abandoned ship on November 30 after a fire broke out in the engine room. First rescue ships on the scene included the tankers 'Hawaiian King' and 'Bardu'. Survivors were later transferred by lifeboats to other ships in the area. The Achille Lauro sank after a final explosion ripped through its bows at dusk on December 2. The US Navy cruiser Gettysburg brought 165 survivors 6t o Djibouti on December 4. Many survivors wore civilian clothing donated by the Gettysburg's crew or parts of US Navy uniforms.
