- Story Text: American post-grunge band Foo Fighters, led by Nirvana's David Grohl, played live at the launch of a new Virgin record store in the United States on Tuesday (April 23).
Earlier, founder and chairman of Virgin Group, Richard Branson, was lowered into the ceremony in Time Square, New York, where he sprayed champagne over the waiting crowds and cut the red ribbon to launch the store.
Foo Fighters began when Grohl formed the band in the wake of the suicide of his lead singer Kurt Cobain, after nearly quitting the music business for good.
Foo Fighters released their debut single "This is the Call" to favourable critical reception and their album Foo, released in late 1995, climbed the charts to enthusiastic reviews this year.
Nirvana's former second guitarist Pat Smear also plays in the band, which has become burdened with expectations from former fans.
Critics have described Foo Fighters' music as formulaic grunge, although some say their new album establishes them as a individual music talent. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
