- Story Text: Libya's interim government forces met with heavy sniper fire as they advanced into Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte on Saturday (September 24).
Ambulances hurtled back and forth, taking the wounded to the hospital.
Meanwhile, fighters in Sirte said they were happy with their progress, after days of setbacks.
"Today has been very good and we are currently in the heart of the city of Sirte, in the Jazira dawaran area," said one fighter.
"We are moving forward step by step and they are calling God's name (in fear), but we are not here to strike at the citizens of the city of Sirte as the sons of Sirte are the sons of Misrata. We are only here to search for the tyrant (Gaddafi), we have no goal except (to catch) the tyrant," he said.
Another fighter said families in Sirte had been held hostage by Gaddafi supporters.
"Today, the brigades of the Misrata revolutionaries entered the city of Sirte to liberate some of the families who were held hostage by the forces of the tyrant. Yesterday some of the families wanted to escape but they started firing at them and a family was hit, we have just retracted two bodies that were charred inside a car," he told Reuters.
NTC commanders say their advance on Sirte has been hampered by the presence of large numbers of civilians, many of whom have fled in the past week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
