- Story Text: Friends and family members gathered in Tripoli on Tuesday (October 11) to bury a fighter loyal to Libya's interim government.
Fawzi Ramadan, 47, was killed in Bani Walid on Sunday (October 9) by forces loyal to Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Ramadan's body was wrapped in Libya's independence flag before being buried in a cemetery in the Tripoli district of Souk al Jouma. After the burial, fellow fighters shot their automatic weapons into the air.
"He went to the battle to liberate the country," said the fighter's father as mourners comforted each other at the gravesite.
Along with Muammar Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte, Bani Walid is one of the last redoubts of Gaddafi loyalists in the country he ruled alone for 42 years.
National Transitional Council (NTC) have started to rebuild their forces in the desert enclave after several weeks of concentrating efforts on Sirte.
The offensive in Bani Walid has been particularly frustrated by stiff resistance from well-drilled loyalist fighters, and also a lack of organisation among the attacking forces who operate in disparate units based on their home towns, with little overall command.
It remains unclear whether the NTC, still based in the eastern city of Benghazi, can unify a country split along tribal and regional lines. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
