- Story Text: World Cup fever is taking over and it is more than just professional soccer players who are getting involved. 'New York's Bravest' took to the pitch in Hamburg on Thursday (June 15, 2006) when firefighters from the city took on their German rivals from the Municipal Fire Brigade.
Hamburg firefighters are champions in Germany's firefighting soccer league, so they are not a pushover.
The New Yorkers' coach, Joe Brosy, said they were in Germany to "share some camaraderie and brotherhood with our fellow firefighters".
Hamburg coach Rainer Lenuweit said: "We play with confidence, we play offensive, we don't crowd in the back, we just try to play the game."
The temperature in Hamburg was quite nice, not like in the rest of the country, were the heat got to almost everyone. A balmy 23 degrees made perfect conditions.
In the end, Hamburg won 2-0.
Referee Gerd Mueller said afterwards: "It was a friendly, indeed, but it was also quite hard, I had to give various yellow cards. But I think I handled the two teams good and fair."
On Friday the New York firefighters will travel to Berlin to play there. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
