Fierce fighting continued in San Salvador and many provincial areas on Sunday as leftist rebels clashed with government forces after peace talks had broken down.
The first guerrilla attack came on Saturday when they launched shells from home-made mortars at infantry barracks on the outskirts of San Salvador. Two children were killed when mortars missed their mark, landing on a nearby house. At least three people were reported dead in the fighting and scores injured.
Late on Saturday, rebels attacked the home of President Alfredo Cristiani. He escaped unhurt and Colonel Rene Emilio Ponce said he was "under complete protection" at an un-named location.
Rebels were reported to have told journalists that the attacks were to avenge the bombing of a leftist union office on October 31 that killed ten people. The rebels blamed the Army and President Cristiani for the bombing.
The attacks came just three days after the rebels' Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front had promised to step up its ten-year-long fight against the US-backed government. More than 70,000 people have died in the conflict.
