The golf teams of Wales, Ireland and France have qualified for the Nations Team Cup final, to be held in October on April 16. Sixteen countries will be competing for golf's riches prize money of 1.2 million U.S. dollars at the famous golf course of St Andrews in Scotland. On April 14, the battle commenced at the Albarella golf course in Italy to see which European teams would make it through to the qualifying round. West Germany, Italy, Austria, Holland, France, Wales and Ireland all competed. The final turned out to be a contest between Wales and Ireland with the Welsh winning 2-1. In the first game Philip Parkin matched Ronan Raefferty putt for putt to give Wales a 69-71 victory. Ian Woosnam also hit 69 against Eamond Darcy's 72 to clinch it for Wales in the second match. In the third, Des Smyth beat Craig Defoy of Wales 72-75. France beat Holland in the play-off for the third and remaining place in the final. In May, there will be a Pacific qualifying tournament where another three nations will be joining the eight teams seeded through to the final.
