    Fighting broke out on Saturday (March 23) in the Iraqi village of Safwan as United States (US) and Saudi troops began distributing food.

    The problems started as US assistance was being handed out to local residents and a Saudi truck pulled up and began distributing rice and bread. Men, women and children scrambled for the aid and fights broke out.

    Safwan, situated in the Iraq border area occupied by US troops, has become home to thousands of desperate and starving war refugees. Among them are Iraqis who fled the war, migrant Egyptian workers and stateless Kuwaiti residents.

    One US soldier involved in distributing the food said he saw adults taking food from children. "That shouldn't happen, it doesn't need to happen, I hope it never happens again," he said.
