- Story Text: At least three Palestinians belonging to the Hamas
guerrilla group have been killed in a blast and exchange of
gunfire with Israeli forces in a northern Arab Israeli town.
At least three Palestinians, who belonged to the Hamas
guerilla group, were killed on Thursday (March 2) during a
day-long standoff with Israeli forces in the northern Arab
Israeli town of Taibe.
Israeli Police Commissioner Yehuda Vilk said it was
"very possible" a fourth guerrilla had been killed but
confirmation would come only on Friday when a search of the
site was completed.
One guerrilla was captured and an Israeli paramilitary
border police was wounded.
Maintaining the siege, and believing that at least two
more guerrillas were inside, police sent in an
explosives-sniffing dog.Vilk said it was killed when a charge
went off.
Hundreds of people stood watching the stand-off from the
street or from roofs of neighbouring buildings.
Deputy Defence Minister Ephraim Sneh identified the
guerrillas as "a group from Hamas" equipped with demolition
charges and explosives. He said Israel assumed they had
planned to carry out an attack in one of its cities.
The presence of the suspected Hamas men in an Israeli Arab
village raised anew questions in Israel about cooperation
between Palestinian militants and Arab citizens of the Jewish
state.Hamas opposes Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.
In Gaza, Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Yassin said:
"We don't have any details on what the Israeli government
is talking about (in Taibe) but based on what we are going
through on a daily basis, we say that our people will not give
up and resistance will continue until we get our rights.
