- Story Text: The Rhodesian army has brought the cavalry back into the modern army to assist its fight against terrorism.
Army strategists have found that horses can get troops into an area of rugged country quicker and more quietly than armoured vehicles.
Many of Rhodesia's now mounted troops had never been on a horse before but their enthusiasm has quickly overcome the initial lack of experience as they continue their training under experienced army riding instructors.
The idea of the mounted troops is to take the foot slogging out of routine patrol work and assist in mopping up operations after terrorist attacks. The unit was only given official government sanction last month but has already proved its effectiveness in an series of mock battles.
When in position to attack, the mounted troops are trained to dismount and go forward on foot, only fighting from the saddle when the need arises. The full benefits of mounted troops are realised when chasing a retreating enemy. Charging at the gallop their shooting from the saddle is most effective against running infantrymen - and the potential for the new mounted unit has assured it a permanent place in the Rhodesian armed forces.
