- Story Text: Spanish woman bullfighter, Angela Hernandez, was the star attraction on Sunday (11 July) when the new San Augustin bullring opened in Caracas.
SYNOPSIS: Angela had the honour of leading the bullfighters into the ring. She's a well known and popular figure on the international bullfighting circuit, and one of very few women taking part in the dangerous sport. Angela was born in Alicante on the Spanish Costa Braya and has been a professional bullfighter for over 10 years.
Angela's ambition to become a bullfighter began in childhood after visiting the bullrings of Alicante. As she grew up, she says she realised there was strong opposition to women entering the bullring. However, she won her licence from the Spanish bullfighting authorities after a series of protests and demonstrations highlighting her demands. She also won approval and support from the less conservative male bullfighters--and promoters quickly realised her commercial novelty in a male dominated sport.
Angela has not yet reached the rank of Matador, the ultimate goal of most bullfighters. She is classed a Toreador -- in the middle rank -- and usually faces the younger bulls which can be just as dangerous and unpredictable as more mature beasts. She's been gored several times in the bullring and is well respected in the profession for her courage and performing style.
