- Story Text: Russia's military and Chechen rebel fighters have both
reported battle successes - and presented contrasting pictures
of the conflict.
Reuters television on Wednesday (January 5) received
pictures of the aftermath of the fiece fighting in the Chechen
village of Duba-Yurt, south of capital Grozny.Russian troops
began storming the village on New Year's eve, sending tanks
there.
Russian Air Force planes and artillery hit targets of
rebel positions around Duba-Yurt and other nearby villages,
that are claimed to be the strongholds of Chechen guerrillas.
Mi-24 helicopter gunships flew 12 sorties to back up ground
troops.Latest official Russian reports from Chechnya,
published by Tass, said in the last 24 hours the Russian
military had killed up to 150 rebels, losing eight of its own
soldiers.
Up to 2,000 rebels were resisting Russian troops trying to
seize Grozny since the end of December.Another 3,000 were
concentrated in the southern mountains.
Hundreds of civilians have fled the Chechen village of
Alkhan-Kala after several hundred Chechen rebels attacked a
Russian military column there, killing eight soldiers.
Chechen forces retook four villages outside Grozny in daring
overnight raids on Wednesday (January 5), as Russia admitted
its drive to take the city was meeting fierce resistance.
Around 600 rebels lead by notorious Chechen field commander
Arbi Barayev attacked Russian troops in the village of
Alkhan-Kala on the night of January 3.
In the course of the fighting eight Russian soldiers were
allegedly killed and 4 were taken prisoner.Chechen forces
retook four villages outside Grozny in daring overnight raids.
Villagers fearing both Chechen rebels and Russian forces
had to flee their homes.Arbi Barayev is held personally
responsible for numerous kidnappings and killings in Chechnya,
including the murder 13 months ago of four engeneers from
Britain and New Zealand.
Several days ago Russian military announced that Barayev
had been killed in a wave of air raids on rebel villages.
Chechen fighters, however, denied the reports.
