- Story Text: Fierce fighting between Russian troops and Chechen independence fighters raged throughout the night in the Chechen capital of Grozny, Itar-Tass news agency said on Friday (January 13).
The official Russian agency, reporting from Grozny, said the city echoed to the crash of intensive artillery shelling and sniper fire.
It said a Russian parliamentary group which had been staying in the Chechen presidential palace, a target for Russian artillery, had left the building during the night and travelled to Nazran in Ingushetia, just outside Chechnya.
The Russian government said on Thursday its troops were making good progress in their drive to capture the devastated city and subdue the region's separatist leaders.
A soundman working with Sky Television, Yuri Tunev, 30, was injured by a sniper during the fighting.
