- Story Text: Kyoto...the ancient capital of Japan...is now hard at work tackling a problem other older cities of the world also face.....how to stem the encroachment of modernisation and preserve all examples of cultural heritage. The capital of Japan for more than a thousand years until just over a century ago, Kyoto prospered as the hub of the nation's political, economic, and cultural activities. It was the home of successive emperors, is regarded by the Japanese as a spiritual home, and by the rest of the world as a valuable cultural legacy. In the post-war period, however, Kyoto came under the influence of Japan's rapid economic development. Quiet tree-lined streets became concrete and asphalt to handle growing traffic congestion, and glass and steel buildings.....although restricted in height......soon began to dominate. Local conservationists are concerned because the city's traditional landscape has been submerged and scattered by this development, which was the subject of a UNESCO symposium in 1970, and have helped frame new legislation which will put greater power and control in the hands of the city and Scenic Beauty councils. There's been no sudden change in Kyoto's landscape, but conservationists are hopeful results will begin to show in a few years. At least, much of Kyoto's culture is being preserved.
