- Story Text: The services of a dry cleaning business which
specialises dealing with in firefighters' protective clothing
have been in great demand from the New York Fire Department
since the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11,
2001.
For the past two weeks, the clothing that New York
City firefighters have been wearing during their search and
rescue efforts at the World Trade Center site has been sent to
a dry cleaning business in Passaic, New Jersey called Trilex.
The protective clothing that firefighters wear would
damaged if it was cleaned in a standard washer or dryer
because it becomes so heavy with water once washed that any
dryer hot enough to dry it cause the clothes to shrink and
break the metal fasteners.
Normally, Trilex cleans about 800 such suits a week, but
at the present time the total is closer to 1500.
Kornhauser thinks his company will be working at full
capacity for several weeks ahead. He said: "For the next six
to seven weeks we're gonna be working twenty-four hours a day,
two runs a day, going in and out, pickup and delivery, until
we clean the whole entire City one time around... We're gonna
go to every battalion once a day."
New York Fire Department Captain Timothy McKinney said it
was of prime importance that any dry cleaner used by the Fire
Department could be relied upon not to impair the safety
features of the specialised fabric of the firefighters'
outfits.
He said: "The basic thing that the Fire Department is
looking for is the reliability to actually wash the material
in a way that won't destroy it along the way, and bring it up
to a good condition, a usable condition, where we have no
compromises with safety."
One firefighter's suit, informally called 'turn-out gear',
costs about 1500 United States dollars.
