- Story Text: Firefighter's day is traditionally celebrated in France
the day before Bastille day, when fire brigades all over the
country hold an open day to the public and put on exhibitions
and demonstrations. This year, French firefighters invited New
York's firefighters to Paris, as a tribute to those who died
on September 11.
French firefighters were joined by their U.S.
counterparts on Saturday (July 13) outside the Paris city
hall, where hundreds gathered to watch a joint mock rescue
from a burning building.
These and similar exhibitions are staged all over France
for firefighters' day, which traditionally falls on the day
before Bastille Day (July 14).
Saturday's ceremonies, attended by French Interior
Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, Defence Minister Michele
Alliot-Marie and the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, had
some special guests from New York, 75 relatives of the
firefighters who lost their lives less than a year ago.
The Paris Fire Brigade also put on a dazzling gymnastics
display.
The joint exercises and ceremonies followed the signing of
a twinning agreement between Parisian and New York
firefighters, 10 months after the September 11 attacks on New
York, which claimed the lives of 343 U.S. firefighters.
The commander of Parisian firefighters General Debarnot
and New York's Fire Chief Daniel Nigro signed the agreement
witnessed by 75 relatives of those killed on September 11.
On Sunday (July 14), the American families will be invited
to attend the Bastille Day parade on the Champs Elysees.
