- Story Text: New tensions continued to grip the Middle East today (Monday) five years after the outbreak of military action that was later to be known as the 1967 Was.
Visnews library film taken on 6 and 7 June, 1967, shows the scene on the Gaza Strip, until then occupied by Egyptian forces. Israel troops entered the city of Gaza after over-running heavily defended Egyptian petitions.
The formal surrender was signed for the Egyptians by the Commander of the Gaza Strip, General Abdul Husni.
Five years later, traffic flows unimpeded across the Gaza-Israeli border. Israeli troops and police patrol the streets inconspicuously.
The early occupation was marked by frequent incidents of terrorism, but these have declined.
Under the Israelis, roads have been improved, Gaza Harbour extended and an industrial centre built up to provide employment for many of the Palestinians in Gaza.
In one factory, workers are turning out uniforms for the Israeli armed forces.
SYNOPSIS: Vehicles burn fiercely on the outskirts of Gaza in this library film taken on 6 June, 1967, as Israeli forces drive forward in the military action that was later to become known as the 1967 War. Until then, the Gaza Strip had been occupied by Egyptian forces. The well-armed Israeli troops entered the city of Gaza after ever-running the heavily defended Egyptian positions.
On the seventh of June, 1967, the Egyptian Commander of the Gaza Strip, General Abdul Husni, signed the formal surrender, handing the Strip over to the Israelis.
Today, five years later, the Strip has changed....
Under the Israeli occupation, read work has gone ahead to keep a pace with the increasing flow of activity between the two territories.
The early occupation was marked by frequent incidents of terrorism, but these have declined. Israeli troops and police patrol the streets inconspicuously.
Gaza Harbour has been extended considerably
In other parts of the town, industries have been encouraged. An industrial centre has been built to provide employment for many Palestinians.
In one factory, Palestinian workers turn out uniform for the Israeli armed forces. But if the fifth anniversary of the 1967 War seemed to pass without incident in the one-time vital Gaza Strip, new tensions are growing in the rest of the Middle East as the threat of confrontation increases.
