- Story Text: One U.S. soldier has been killed in a gunfight in
Baghdad, witnesses said.
A U.S. soldier was shot on Tuesday (April 27) as
troops patrolled a bus and taxi station on the eastern
outskirts of Baghdad, witnesses said.
A soldier from the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps and a
translator who were in the patrol said the soldier suffered
fatal wounds.
"Shooting started from the building as we were
conducting routine work. One U.S. soldier was killed,"
Iraqi sergeant Thamir Qassim said.
And Alaa Majid, a translator with the U.S. troops,
said, "As I and two U.S. soldiers walked inside a public
transport station, a man opened fire on the U.S. soldier
and ran away, and then shooting started from the building.
It happened around 11:00 a.m. [0700 GMT]."
There was no immediate comment from the U.S. military
in Baghdad.
The witnesses said gunmen on rooftops fired assault
rifles at the patrol, triggering a gunbattle. There were no
other known casualties.
U.S. forces sent reinforcements and conducted house
searches in the area, the witnesses said.
