- Story Text: While peace makers pour of over talks of compromise to
break the latest cycle of conflict in the Balkans Macedonian
villagers flee across the border. Ironically one such group
has sought sanctuary in the home of a Kosavar family which,
just two years ago, sought shelter with them in Macedonia.
Exactly two years ago to the day the family of 70
year-old Iznet Vela were refugees in Macedonia, running away
from Yugoslav government forces. Now they are returning the
favour.
The Macedonian family that took them in are refugees
themselves in Kosovo, escaping Macedonian army bombardments of
their home village.
"We were there and they were very generous and of course
we will take them in. We were under pressure as they had
pressure to leave and it's very hard to leave the house but
there is nothing you can do because they have to leave because
of the children, they were scared," said Iznet.
On Thursday (June 14) 28 year-old Mykedeze, who did not
want to give her family name as her husband remains in
Macedonia, crossed the border with her stepmother and two
daughters.
"We had to leave because no arrivals, no work for
Albanians, especially in government, business, even doctors
and nurses are Macedonians," Mykedeze said.
Mykedeze doesn't know how long they will have to impose on
Iznet and his family. But when they made the decision to leave
their home in Dvorce near Skopje Mykedeze must have thought --
after a week which included the killing of five soldiers in an
ambush, retaliatory burning of Albanian homes and government
threats to declare a state of war, compromise is hard to
reach.
